Jonas to Spurs on a free?

A few weeks back I was talking with people over possible striking targets for Spurs which exist under the radar. I brought up the name of Gremio’s Brazilian frontman who, in the last few seasons, just seems unable to stop scoring. If you were to go by his form in Brazil alone then you would take him in a snap but there are questions over whether players, particularly attacking players, coming from the Brazil league can adapt to English football.

I felt Jonas had a better chance than most. He’s already 26, & that extra age & maturity can help when trying to settle abroad; he’s been consistent in front of goal over a number of seasons now & is on the verge of a call up & 1st cap for the national team; he’s 6ft and, unlike many Brazilian forwards, is strong in the air and not afraid to get stuck in.

I still thought it unlikely tho. As much as I’ve admired his exploits in front of goal for Gremio recently I just thought the chances of us signing a relatively unknown (in the UK at least), 26 year old South American with no caps were nil at best.

However, we all know Harry’s eye for a bargain &, what I did not know, Jonas’ contract expires this year & he will be available for free!! There are questions whether he would receive a permit for this country, & that could be a major issue as their are few workarounds for a player his age as there were for Sandro for example, but if we can secure one then we could be onto a winner here, & a very cheap one 2!!

Just listen to this:

This year, for Gremio, Jonas has played 49 games (47 starts) and has 33 goals and 4 assists.

Last year, for Gremio, Jonas played 41 games (29 starts) and scored 22 goals

I might not normally be so interested in the news that we’ve been looking at some Brazilian goalscorer but here’s the thing, after my conversation about him I might just have sent 1 or 2 emails. (ahem!). Far be it from me to suggest that there is any sort of connection & we know that our chief scout has been doing plenty of scouting in that part of the world (hence our signing of Sandro) & he would have to be pretty useless not to notice a guy scoring as often as Jonas, but nevertheless the fact I sent such emails & then to have the club linked with the guy in question has immediately caught my attention. It seems too coincidental & whilst I’m sure anything I’ve said has anything to do with it, I know 100% that the club knew about this guy a month or so ago & it makes me think, therefore, this link could well be real.

Tottenham ready to swoop for Brazilian scoring sensation
