Memories of White Hart Lane – Man Utd Away League Cup 3rd 1989

I remember being really nervous about this game…. (well it was Man Utd away after all).

We had struggled to get past Southend in the previous round, so the prospect of meeting United at Old Trafford was daunting to say the least, (plus the fact that you just dont win up there!!!), but we had beaten SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY the weekend before (3-0), so we were playing ok….

From the start we were under the smothering waves of United pressure, but didnt concede. We were holding on, but starting to play some nice football, building fluent attacks. When VINNY SAMWAYS found himself in a bit of space on the left, halfway in the United half, he fed a little ball into GARY LINEKER just outside the United penalty area, he turned and played a quick one-two with PAUL WALSH (i think), before smashing the return into the bottom corner of the United net.

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLL, this was unthinkable, we have taken the lead at OLD TRAFFORD, does it get any better than this….

Well actually, YES, it did get a whole lot better. Shortly after scoring, Spurs broke down the right, when VINNY SAMWAYS latched on to a loose ball, then played a quick one-two with GARY LINEKER on the halfway line, and galloped half the length of the pitch before slotting a very cool finish deep into the United net.

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLL, this was now the stuff of dreams. 2-0 at OLD TRAFFORD, surely i will wake up soon…..

Late into the second half, after a deep cross from the right, NAYIM smashed in a spectacular volley from about 12 yards. This really was a fantastic goal, and was worthy of the delerium that followed from the travelling Spurs faithfull.

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLL, 3-0, this really was one of THE great results in TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR history.

What made it even more special for me, was the fact that VINNY SAMWAYS is my cousin. This performance from Spurs was one of the greatest I have seen, and is right up there in terms of “BEST SPURS GAME EVER” for me.

This SPURS team went on to win SILVERWARE a few years later, with an FA CUP WIN over Nottingham Forest, but thats a story for another blog….
