England kick off their Under 21’s Championship today in Sweden with an opening tie against Finland, kick off 17.15. Although Spurs midfielder, Danny Rose, got a late call up, he was part of the winning side that beat Azerbaijan 7 v 0 last week in a friendly. Danny came on for the last 35 minutes and managed to set up two goals. The Under 21’s face a tough group, with matches against Spain on Thursday 18th, Kick off 19.45 and Germany on Monday 22nd, Kick off 19.45. If they mange to get through the group then a Semi Final clash could be against Italy, Serbia, Sweden or Belarus. It’s great to see a Spurs player in the squad and gives us an extra reason to watch the games over the next week. In the last tournament in 2007, England got to the semi finals but lost in a dramatic penalty shoot out 12 -13 to the Netherlands. Stuart Pearce has spoke out today saying that whoever wants to win the tournament will have to win on a penalty shootout. At least we don’t have to worry that Pearce is going to step up and take one. Others to watch in the tournament will be ex-Spurs striker Fraser Campbell, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Let’s hope that Rose can get a chance to play in a couple of games. It’s good to see someone from the Spurs youth coming through and playing for our Nation. If we can get through the group stages, we might even be in with a chance of winning it. Come on Danny boy and Good luck England.
