'The draw I wanted' - Rafa - News Articles - Tottenhamhotspur.com

Rafael van der Vaart says we've got the draw he was hoping for against former club Real Madrid – who he describes as ‘the biggest club in the world’.

We travel to the Bernabeu for the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday April 5, and the Dutchman is relishing his return to the Spanish capital.

It was from Real that Rafa arrived at the Lane on deadline day of the summer transfer window having spent the previous two seasons with the La Liga giants – the most successful team in European history with nine trophies to their name.

And he has promised his current team-mates the experience of a lifetime when we take on Jose Mourinho’s men over two legs.

Following the draw being made on Friday morning, Rafa said: “I was happy when the draw was made. I had hoped this would happen because it will be fantastic to go back to Madrid.

“I have a lot of friends there and it will be great to see them all. It’s a big game, first leg away which is good for us, so I’m happy.

“For me, it’s the biggest club in the world. Of course Barcelona are the best team in the world at this moment but you can feel the history and how big the club is when you arrive at the stadium.

“The Bernabeu is fantastic. It’s a great pitch, the stadium holds 90,000 and it’s a fantastic feeling to play there. I played there for two years and had a great time there, so it’s a dream to be going back.”

And Rafa believes we can do it, adding: “We don’t have pressure, we can play our game and we have a chance I’m sure.”

Well I would think that we now have to beat Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United to win the thing.

Nobody will be able to say that we won't have earned it.

cameil - Welcome! I'm really excited about this match, I think we have a chance but obviously you guys are heavy favorites.

Key match-ups: Ronaldo v. Corluka, Ozil v. Sandro - Two of our top defensive players, so I like their chances, but Ronaldo and Ozil are two of the best creative attackers in the world right now. If Corluka and Sandro make life hard on them, I think our chances will be improved immensely. Other end of the pitch, Bale v. Ramos and Lennon v. Marcelo. I think this could be a good preview of a possible Spurs/Barca tie - both teams use their fullbacks primarily to attack and provide some added width to 4-3-3 formations. Against Spurs, that may not work b/c Lennon and Bale will run at them all day long. If your fullbacks can neutralize our width, then we're done for. VDV doesn't have the pace to create much for himself in the middle and Crouch isn't going to win anything by himself. Those two need strong play from the wings.

Good afternoon.
First of all greetings to all Tottenham fans, I am Real Madrid and I would start by asking if not it odd that Barcelona will always touch the easiest teams in the draw of Champions.
Sorry for my English, a greeting to everyone.

Hello gentlemen. I`m a Spanish Madrid fan and I think that the matches will be awesome.

First of all, we are very comfortable with the 2leg away. Madrid is not a team built in order to take the control of the game. In fact, Mourinho prefers to play the 1st leg at home.

Secondly, you shouldn`t undervalue a player like Marcelo. He has improved a lot and I could say he`s one of the top left wingbacks in Europe right now. On the other hand, people usually trends to overstimate Ramos. He is a total disaster on the right. I wouldnt ruled out the possibilty of Arbeloa (a more defensive wingback) for the Lane match.

Sorry for my English.

I don't think Barca get easy teams, they just get easy referees!

Hopefully Barca and United will progress, as the road to the final will be fantastic to watch even if we lose against Madrid.

I also hope we attack Real like we know we can, and they attack us as well. I'd rather lose 12-1 than 1-0.

I think we can beat them at White Hart Lane, but going to the Bernabeu and getting a goal will be tough.

We will need to repeat our away performance against Milan, although maybe it will be better if we are not leading going into the second leg.

Van der Vaart needs to play! Bale, Modric, Lennon and Sandro need to dominate the midfield. Do that and we are half-way there.

San Siro, Bernabeu, Camp Nou, Wembley... to dare is to do!

If that would have been true about Barca getting the easiest team.... would they have got your Real Madrid? was it 5:0 or 6:0 or something.... Only joking. Welcome top the spurs forum, I reckon you will beat us 2:1 at your place, and we will beat you 2:0 at home....

Come on you Spurs

Haha, a comment from a Madrid fan:

"For the back four do not know. Know how to play football? Anyway, their names are scary. Straight out of a Tarzan movie!"

I love it!

Right, if Barca was going to draw the easiest side it'd be Schalke. Shaktar is sneaky good plus I think the travel to Ukraine is really hard on teams from west Europe (see: City, Manchester). That said, Barca should go through, but it won't be easy.

Out of curiosity, what makes you say Ramos is overrated? I've only seen a few Madrid games this year and I've always been more impressed by Marcelo, but that was more b/c of how class Marcelo was, not necessarily b/c of anything deficient in Ramos.

Reading the Madrid forums. Way nicer people than the Milan fans, that's for sure. Makes me look forward to the game even more. The Google translations are hilarious though sometimes: "They have a very balanced, very basic wardrobe."

Where has the day can be, but it is very good goalkeeper, seemed at first to get a package, was a substitute, but changed her story.
