I need an Englishman to explain this... why in the hell are so many in England absolutely trashing Kane and his selection as captain? He comes out and says we're gonna try and win the world cup and then he gets hammered more by people in England. Don't the English want the team to try and win the World Cup? What gives?

I'm obviously not English but I always see a lot of self-loathing by England fans in general, that they'll criticize anything.

On top of that, a lot of the other club supporters hate Kane now because of his goal claiming antics.

Virtually all English players play in England and so are disliked by the majority of fans because they play for a rival EPL team. How can you have a successful English team when the fans hate most of the players? It's a thankless job being on the England side. Personally I wouldn't do it.

I dislike Ronaldo so much. But you really have to respect what he can do out there...

Why do you not like him? He's seems to be a really nice guy and a real family man off the field.

    Pluses.
He's generous with his money and doesn't make a big show of it. He has lots of pretty girlfriends.

    Minuses.
He wasn't very nice to Bale. He wears makeup on the pitch. Who would do that?

    Lol.

    I’m assuming you’re being facetious?

I don’t know him as a human, but I hate all his on field antics

Is it not well known Ronaldo is a gent off the field? Incredibly charitable and seems to be one of the hardest working players ever. Have to respect what he's doing at his age and he isn't looking like he's slowing down.

I don’t have any idea about his personal life; hopefully he donates his money to good causes and such. I believe when you say he does.

I respect the hell out of his ability, skill, etc. what I don’t like are his antics, mostly the bitching and generally seemingly acting like a child when things aren’t going his way.

Love him or hate him you have to admit he is a full level above Messi or anyone else for that matter, has been for years.

Messi has been just as good. RM’s CL success and the fact that Argentina doesn’t participate in the Euros distorts perceptions.

Messi playing for a much better international side also distorts things. Messi hasn't been half the player he is when playing for his country. While Ronaldo has been carrying Portugal on his back for 3 years now.

Strongly disagree, domestically they maybe on a par with each other, what one does the other basically matches year in year out, but Ronaldo’s record in the CL is just astonishing. Ronaldo may have the Euros but Messi has the Copa America, but again Ronaldo’s record (with a second tier team) is also astonishing...there was a period when people could argue for hours about who was the best, but not anymore, Ronaldo has blown Messi away over the past 4/5 years.

Domestically they have NOT been on par with each other. Messi has been better.

Ronaldo one man team drags his country to great heights, while Messi misses penalties...

Messi missed many of Argentina's WC qualifying matches, and yet it was still his quality that dragged them to qualification. They would've missed the World Cup without him (as I'm sure Portugal would've without Ronaldo). Despite the better quality players on Argentina's team, they played terribly....except for Messi who was great.

What are we going back to? The 2014/15 season (i.e. this World Cup cycle)? Which was Ronaldo's best season in the last 4?

In those 4 years, Messi has scored 140 goals while Ronaldo has scored 134. So Ronaldo is pretty close. But in terms of assists, Messi has 55 while Ronaldo has 38. That's really not very close. Messi has gotten 45% more assists than Messi in that time. Messi is a better playmaker than Ronaldo is.

You can also check out the whoscored ratings for their La Liga seasons. Messi has been meaningfully higher in each of those years. In fact, eyeballing the data, there has NEVER been a year where Ronaldo had a higher rated whoscored La Liga season than Messi.

    https://www.whoscored.com/Players/11119/History/Lionel-Messi
    https://www.whoscored.com/Players/5583/History/Cristiano-Ronaldo

Ronaldo has played incredibly and better than Messi in recent years in the CL and for his country. But Messi has been the better player in the week in week out grind of La Liga.

Messi has also played about 15 more games in that period.
