I’m pretty sure this is meant to be sarcastic/ironic.. does benny strike you as the type to hate anyone? I’m sure there is a goal.com story in there waiting to get out though.

I wrote a piece the other week after a valued contact told me Chelsea were considering a bid for BAE.

Now, because I wrote it doesn’t mean it will definitely happen but my guy is normally pretty near the mark – not always though, and I hope he’s wrong.

I love BAE, but I was told the fee could reach £16 million. That’s mental money for a left-back…

It sounds like a nice deal but I do not know if we can afford to lose him, we will need another competent player in a position in which he is basically the only competent guy we have. Vertonghen does not count as he is a cb first. also he has relatively excellent chemistry with Bale, this is something that does not emerge out of thin air, for example Lenny and Walky have not had great chemistry always. He is getting on in years but he is such a fun character as well. He could be the cool version of Gary Neville for us, a nice example for the youths. BAE brings more than himself as an individual to the foosaball table, sometimes literally

I rate BAE very highly but £16m is in fact mental money for a LB.

You can get very good FB’s for £7m-£10m.

I’d want Benny to stay just cause I love his personality and watching him play (Also the best LB we’ve had in a very long time). We know he’d wanna leave if he got an offer of much better wages tho.

The reason they would pay so much is because of how few quality LBs there are out there…which would obviously make finding a replacement difficult.

The only positive (if there is one) that I can take from this is that given DL’s usual transfer strategy and BAE’s age, we may well have already been planning on cashing in on Benny this summer. If that is the case it is possible that DL/the transfer panel/AVB may already have list potential replacements, or at least I hope that they do because there is no doubt that if we are offered that amount of money for BAE he will be leaving.

he says continually he does not plan nor want to play past 30 years old, and he is 28 now. why would they go after him with that known?

Maybe they believe that they could persuade him to extend his career beyond 30 with the lure of cold, hard cash? It is well known that is his motivation playing, and I am in no doubt that Benny will be physically capable of playing on longer should he so wish.

This is all speculation of course, but it does seem to be a case of money being able to buy you pretty much anything in the world of football.

His contract expires next summer and wants a higher wage which is the conflict were having with him right……it wouldnt surprise me to see him go this winter or next summer if a huge bid like the one being talked about comes in.

They bought an out-of-form Torres for £50m.

Logic doesn’t apply to Chelsea football club. Not much applies to Chelsea football club actually.

Benny has always been up front. But he has never said football is only just about money. He has said it is a job and jobs are for earning a living, it is important not to come to major conclusions based on paraphrases of these dated remarks. He is not a simplistic or singleminded guy, your post assumes that he is. There is absolutely no evidence that he will go somewhere else just because the money is better. There is evidence that he would go somewhere if the job was better. And those are two very very different things.

I’ve never been a fan of him and would be happy if he went. I’ll watch him today and see how he does. My opinion isn’t personal, if I see him play well, not give the ball away and put almost every pass in the air, I can change my mind.

My point was I don’t dislike him for disliking hims sake.

You’ll have to wait with watching him a while longer, doesn’t start today, not even on the bench. :p

As you will ;) However, my point was that to judge him on one appearance is kind of fickle. Either you don’t rate him, after having watched him on many occasions, or you do.

Apart from that, there is the question as to whether he is on form, or not. I’m sure that we have all seen BAE put in some very decent performances, although our memories may often betray us. There is also a groundswell of opinion, from what I have read, that the post-injury BAE we have now is not the same pre-injury BAE we had before.

In short, tldr; judging a player on a single appearance doesn’t necessarily tell you how good he is, although it may indicate how bad he can be.

Finally, that’s not to say that we shouldn’t have another LB option other than BAE, or an out of position Vert, or a mediocre (also oop?) Naughton.
