i watched the Leicester City game…i was pretty impressed with Naughton. He made one stupid header back to his Keeper in the first half which was pounced upon and should have been scored, but other than that he was good…….

This is a great article about the rise of Steven Caulker, cant wait for this kid to be in our starting XI Spurs prospect Steven Caulker climbing the ladder with Bristol and England – Tottenham Hotspur – Tottenham Journal AT 18 years old, Steven Caulker is part of a new wave of English players, promoted by a year or three into an England Under-21 team that it is hoped will form the basis for a 2014 World Cup performance equal to Germany’s showing at South Africa 2010. Unfortunately the timing of his recent debut as a substitute against Germany couldn’t really have been worse, with half-time substitute goalkeeper Jason Steele sent off and England 2-0 down. It was not a scenario in which Caulker’s defensive solidity, aerial ability and leadership could be adequately shown, although the very fact that Stuart Pearce picked him shows something. The ability that led Pearce to select the youngster has been on show at Bristol City though. Having conceded 22 goals in their first 11 games of the season – the last three of which Caulker participated in, while he was trying to settle into a new team lacking in confidence – City have conceded just six goals in their last eight games, including three clean sheets in their four most recent Championship matches. With David James, Jamie McAllister and Liam Fontaine ever-present this season, the difference has been Caulker. Many Bristol City fans rate him as the best player in the squad and on current form only top scorer Jonathan Stead has had as good a season as the teenage defender thus far. Caulker is evidently having a similar experience to his time with Yeovil Town last season, when he proved himself to be easily their best player too, winning the Player of the Season award. The difference is that this is the Championship, and the next step above is Premier League football – possibly with Spurs. Two months older than Blackburn’s Phil Jones, Caulker may be a step behind as far as Premier League experience, but his reputation is growing. He is regarded by many fans to be alongside Kyle Walker, the most talented of the youngsters coming through at White Hart Lane, who are currently scattered across the Championship and League 1. At every level of football he has been challenged with so far, he has proved to be a cut above the rest of the players on the pitch, despite often being the youngest man on the field. Everything in his game and mentality suggests that he is heading right to the top, and it may not be a huge exaggeration to suggest that Spurs might have found the new Ledley King – although here’s hoping that the original has many years left at the top level of English football with Tottenham.

This definition could scarcely be more apt for 18 year-old Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Steven Caulker, whose impressive performances in shutting out the opposition on loan at Bristol City can’t have failed to grab the attention of Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. Caulker moved to Ashton Gate just days after making his Spurs debut in the Carling Cup North London derby at White Hart Lane and his performances for Keith Millen’s Robins side earned him a first England U21 cap last month, coming on as a substitute in the game against Germany. Successive clean sheets have helped Bristol City to record back-to-back wins as they recover from their dreadful start to the season and, while Caulker has been a key factor in this, he is realistic enough to know that his chances of an imminent breakthrough into the first team fold at Tottenham remain slim for now. He has already made the step up from League One having spent last season at erstwhile FA Cup giant-killers Yeovil Town, where he racked up 46 appearances on his way to winning four of the club’s five end-of-season awards. A four-time borough 400m champion, the 6’3†Caulker has the athleticism to go with his traditional stopper’s qualities and he has been talked about as a potential Ledley King for the future – a high target to set for any young centre-back but one which he has made a jolly good start of realising. With William Gallas, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Bassong also on Spurs’ books, Caulker is unlikely to figure much in Tottenham’s first team for a few years yet but the kind of education he is currently getting at Ashton Gate could stand him in good stead to be a defensive stalwart for both club and country for years to come.

You really thought that? I thought he took his goal well but wasn’t really that creative. I didn’t see any qualities that would land him anywhere near our first team squad. Probably a championship player Imo
Going to watch the QPR game vs Watford in 15 mins, hopefully Walker has another good outing for them.
Even though QPR are down 3-0 Kyle Walker has been outstanding, great going forward with and without the ball and has done a good job with his defensive duties. His performances have only gotten better this season and he is making the most of this loan move. In my eyes, he will be our first choice RB next season.

just thought i’d say caulker was yet again outstanding. a query regarding rose however. going forward rose doesnt look to offer much but he put in some excellent tackles today. has he ever played left back?
Yes, but maybe once or twice in preseason….I think he might have played LB for England at a younger age.
i think he would make a better left back because his tackling is top notch, he also won a header against a 6ft troll today. one criticsm today however was yet again he very rarely beat his man, but on the odd occasion he did was often wasteful. made one excellent run today beating 3 players before playing a simple ball which then went on for the 1st goal
Yeah I read some of the comments on your forum, I dont think he could LB for us in the PL. I dont expect him to be with us next season, depends on what we do with some of our other youngsters who play on the left hand side too
Post this in another thread but here it is for the loan watch on Obika Obika has been useless for Palace and needs to be recalled asap. Palace fans after this past weekend were ripping him apart on their forum and he has been shocking for them. I really dont think he’ll make it with us, and in his position I’d rather have him back at the club training with us rather than being in a situation that he’s in at Palace. He has been injured off and on but he hasnt been impressive since he’s been on loan. Here’s some quotes Came on in 84th minute for the 0-0 draw versus Hull. Here is a collection of comments seen on the first few pages of their match thread – "Obika … is a disgrace, **** knows how he’s scored so many at reserve level" "Obika shouldnt be in the squad, we have far better options" "Obika was shit" "I never want to see Obika play again for this club." Makes me sick to think how much money he’s being paid to do zero." After saying all that, I just watched the end of the game that was on replay and he came on and lost out on every 50 50 ball between him and a Hull defender, all 6 of them. 4 times he was flat on his arse after getting out muscled. I think those comments are just a general description of his time at Palace, he worked hard for the small amount of time that he was on but as I said above I dont think he’ll make it here.
So I went on the Bristol City forum tonight and word is that Steven Caulker may be going out on loan to Celtic after his City loan ends in January or even a PL side according to this….however I’m pretty sure he is there until the end of the season. I would prefer him saying that he wants to prove him self at City then slog it out at Spurs for a place, but i can fully understand a young player wanting to play regularly. Harry, before he left, seemed to rate him (as well as Livermore) highly so maybe he has a future with us, but if not good luck to the bloke…. also…. 1990- There is iTK on Naughton, saying 2.5 million plus add ons I agree about Rose, but he hasnt looked consistent since he’s been at Bristol City…..some reckon he’ll be sold to them in January which I dont think will happen but I feel he’ll leave in the summer
Even if it is the 2.5m Spursman that seems like a massive drop from what we paid. ( I am under the impression that for the 2 of them we paid £11m, with Naughton being £7m.) Here what the Leicester fans think of him……. BBC – 606 – A Forum Conversation As for Rose, he obviously has something about him. Harry would not just throw him into possibly our most important game of the season last year if he wasn’t any good. I personally am not to worried about his inconsistency. Lennon was inconsistent at his age and probably still is a little bit. I, probably like yourself, just want to see us produce some youth products so the club doesn’t have to just throw huge sums of money trying to fix problem areas in the team.
I know the Leicester fans love him, I’ve gotten on their forum a couple of times. But I just think HR is wanting to cut ties with him and from what I remember it was 5 million a piece for Walker & Naughton but if he was 7 we wont recoup all of that back. I can see him leaving for that small sum if the add ons are heavy.
Also this to me makes a lot of sense, saw it on another forum and I agree with it regarding Naughton being sold and the home grown rule "With the 25 man squad you really need to nail down your place before you turn 21. Even if there are no more ins and outs in January Naughton will lose his squad place to Woodgate or Khumalo; and come the start of next season Bale, Sandro, Livermore Dos Santos (if he’s still here) will all be of age and competition will be that much tighter. So Naughton has to be sold to anyone prepared to put in a decent offer, even if it means a loss, same probably with Dos Santos. Levy might think twice in future before shelling out big bucks for unproven youngsters." Walker & Rose have 1 more season before they’re counted
As reported yesterday Andros Townsend is being recalled from Ipswich, most likely for his lack of minutes recently. Keane does seem to change up his first XI a lot, however Andros did have some very good outings for them so hopefully he gets another loan after the window is up. With that said its made me assume Danny Rose will be staying at Bristol City on a permanent deal after January as I feel the club rates Andros higher than Danny.
